Grow spinach seeds today! It's one of the most nutritious of the leaf vegetables and it is rich in vitamin A and iron. Delicious cooked or fresh in salads, this hardy, quick-growing crop thrives in cool weather. Plant spinach seeds as early in the spring as possible, or in the fall (Bolt-resistant varieties are best for spring sowing.) If planting in fall, raise blight resistant varieties. They will winter-over for early spring harvest if protected from winter winds by mulch or snow.

Fresh Market Grower Tips

One of the most nutritious of the leaf vegetables, fresh spinach has a sweet foliage and a distinct flavor. Its ability to produce a crop in cool weather, and even resist light frosts, has made it a favorite of northern vegetable growers. Because of the ease with which it grows, its compact size, and the rapidity with which it matures, spinach deserves a place in every roadside and fresh market. If you are cutting and selling spinach the very same day, you have a distinct advantage over growers from other states or countries that ship into your area. Spinach will lose some of its nutritional value over several days, so “grow local - sell fresh” is always best for your customers. If you have never tried selling baby leaf spinach, give it a try. Consumers are looking for it.
