Lavender is a highly popular perennial (or tender perennial) that is used in both ornamental and herb gardens. Considered an ‘evergreen shrub’, there are a number of different species, and hundreds of cultivars. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the most commonly grown lavender, but the more tender Spanish lavender (Lavandula stoechas) has many uniquely appealing characteristics. Tiny tubular flowers in shades of blue, purple, or white are set on numerous stems that cover the plants. The flowers are often cut and dried for use in dried flower arrangements or potpourri. Plant height can vary between 1-3 feet. depending on species and cultivar. Other appealing attributes of interest to gardeners and landscapers, lavenders are not attractive to deer or rabbits, and once they are established, they are drought tolerant.

Growing Lavender in Your Garden

Here are a few tips if you want to grow lavender from seed:

  • Start indoors: Lavender seeds do best indoors, 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost date of the season. If you wish to sow them directly, do so in early spring or when freezing temperatures cease in your region.
  • Cold stratify: It's recommended to cold stratify your seeds by refrigerating them for three weeks before planting.
  • Plant: Add two seeds per hole or pellet and allow them to germinate on top of moistened soil. Cover your trays and expose them to plenty of light. Ideally, the soil temperature should be around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the seedlings sprout and are twice the size of the trays, you can pot them and eventually transplant them.
